You mentioned "Jerusalem. There is a word in Hebrew that’s used for how Jerusalem feels–”Lachatz."

Lachatz is the feeling of too much of the stress hormone, Cortisol. It is the "fight or flight" chemical that jacks people up, makes them hyper aware, hyper critical....kids who grow up in war zones, neglected or abused often wind up with a high natural set point of cortisol that lasts a lifetime. Anxiety disorders, insomia, and self medicating often start in the teen years. The bodies natural antidote to cortisol is...endorphins. This is released after fight/flight = exercise. It is the bodies natural pain killer. Alot of kids in various hoods either become addicted to their own endorphins via basketball and other sports (a good laugh/comedy releases them, too) that levels their cortisol levels or hey...check it...they join the crips or bloods and fight and do & sell faux endorphins...drugs. So, the chemical thing has a lot to do with the us vs them thing, and sports is definitely a healthy choice when it comes to managing too much cortisol...from too much stress...So....perhaps there needs to be uh...arab vs jew soccer teams that meet all the time. Personally, I think they should all start surfing as that would mellow them out even faster....but....soccer balls are easier to come by....and maybe closer to home, a project to get the crips and bloods all into swim fins and on boogie boards might be the ticket. People run on chemicals like cars run on gas, but seem seriously uneducated about their own body chemistry and how to manage it. It's an amazing world to explore.

Jenks, I know - it was just a comment. I vote on issues - it's not a social us vs them thing with me. I do see and agree that an incrediable amount of education needs to go on, and on and on - but not mudslinging and aggro. I have a family that has a VP of a major energy company in it and who grew up in the mid- east and a step family that had the head of NBC in it and vacationed with William R. Hearst. On the otherhand, my primary caregiver was an original so cal, mendo, humboldt hippie - 60's. Go figure what the annual family get togethers sound like - yes, lots of....talking...sharing...turning things over. It's not an us vs them - it turns into an exploration and learning process of our different experiences and views. My previous point is that the only person in my life who is into the aggro us vs them thing, is bi-polar and it suits her to a T. I LoVe learning but when it all becomes a mudsling of BS, I am not learning anymore - and - I need to leave the TV and find books or the discovery channel! Most everyone I know is totally over what's left of the "process" going on...they just want it over. It's turned into some kinda skanky moshpit of bad ads! :-) I'm up for parody's of them all.

birdie, that is an incredibly oversimplified view of what's actually going on. the "us vs. them" mentality is something that's built into human nature. it's part of the package of being social animals, not simply of bi-polar individulals. and in this election in particular it has had an incredibly galvanizing force that all of us are confronted with on a daily basis, no matter what the state of our chemical balance. simplifying complex situations like this is not the same thing as understanding them.

I only have one friend who is addicted to the polarizing media frenzy...and...she is bi-polar, and the disorder I can see, plays right into it. I wonder now if hardcore sports fans have a high percentage of bi-polar-ness in their ranks, too. It takes a certain kind of mania, some hostility and a need to have opposing sides. On the otherhand, the average educated on-the-actual issues person has known who they will be voting for and what - for quite awhile now - and may have already voted absentee and left a paper trail. I mean, it's a no brainer, right? So, all the media frenzy and polarizing is now impotent, as far as I am concerned. But, if I was bi-polar, I bet my vote would be cast and I would be hollering at the TV and all the adverts and latched on to it all like a pit-bull! It feeds things alright..that media madness. Kinda scary, actually. Myself, I've switched to DVD's and books. Obama has my vote, cast in paper. Done deal. Movin' forward. :-)

another quality post.

one of the most heartening moments of this distressingly divisive election for me is actually that recent video ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_HcBQfPDto ) where statements from McCain's audience are so bereft of polarization and ridiculousness that he is finally left no choice but to defend the character of his opponent and return a little decency to the process.

Unfortunate that it had to be juxtaposed against such ignorant bile, but such is the way of the dichotomy I suppose.
