Good article! That burka is an "imprisonment" as your article clearly shows this. Thank you for writing this..it has opened up my eyes to my own as well as others own modern day enslavements.
When you know the problem...it's easier to fix.

@missMorgan, thanks for the comment. I just have to point out, however, that I don't really think personal choices such as breast implants or botox (however socially-pressured they may be) are really at all equivalent with institutionalized, religion-based, extremist demands that limit not simply choice, but access to something as basic as EMPATHY. Also, birth control is really neither here nor there. If anything, birth control helps to level the playing field between men and women, rather than enabling and emphasizing systemic inequality such as the burqa does.

What an interesting argument.... I have never heard it put this way. I was not sure of your argument in the beginning, but by the end you sold me.
I do agree that people communicate more through facial expression, and you can learn a lot instantly about someone by watching their face. If someone wants to hide a reaction, they most naturally hide their face from you...or try not to look you in the eye.
Your argument points out a very important part of social engineering against women. Although, Americans are doing the same thing with breast implants and birth control. We are allowed "freedom of look", but we still submit to the same abuse. Things like Botox are having the same effect on being able to read people's emotions via facial reaction.
Good thoughts, positive argument, and inspiring read! :)

Thanks for bringing Sarkozy's actions here to my attention, Roma. As a female in America, I am consistently shocked at other Americans' passive attitudes towards women's rights in other countries/cultures.
Sarkozy's views on human rights and freedom and his corresponding actions consistently inspire me....once upon a time, he might have been called an American...

Your point is beautifully illustrated in this short piece. I was also quite pleased upon hearing about what happened in France, with the same resounding message from some here at home that to deny religious freedom is to deny the very foundations of American democracy. However I see your objection as a lot more relevant in this particular case. Nice one!
