Why decline them? The Om logo on the VISA card doesn't bother me at all, lots of hippies have plain old VISAs (and the hologram onit doesn't stand for the universe!) The only thing that's really missing in the Om ad is the substance: what distinguishes their card services, besides the logo? It would have been helpful to let them know, and improve their product, if it mattered.

Working Assets and other green orgs offer activist credit cards; I see no problem with that. And, it's their activist donations that distinguish their product.

The so-called enlightened sub-culture is awfully self-congratulatory and insulated sometimes, taking themselves so seriously, and coming from some pretty thin premises to boot. Sure, we throw some great parties, I love those, they're great. But how many of us donate to the ACLU, or write letters for Amnesty International, or volunteer at all?

When I see more new agers acting more selflessly, I'll take them more seriously, whether VISA card, cash, or barter-for-services. ;)

That is hilarious. Love the Barbie one, too. Speaking of which, I hear Paris Hilton has been "reading" books about spirituality.

BTW, I love this blog.

There's a publication on display in the café in my office building called "Whole Life Times", in which I first saw that Visa advertisement. Just about every other page is a similarly entertaining ad - my favorite being a full-page spread of a suitably noneuropean-looking man in beads and hemp strolling barefoot down a beach hawking 'holistic dentistry'.
