I really enjoyed reading this. I've been on PCs my whole life, and still work on a PC, but for my home computer I just bought a Mac a month or so ago. I'm not totally in love with it but I'm trying to give it time because I think maybe I just need to get used to it. I had several reasons for choosing a Mac but I still don't like the style aspect of it. My boyfriend jokingly said "now you're one of the cool kids" and I HATED it.

I've long been anti-Mac for the very reason you note that the new Microsoft commercials do: they show Mac users as snobbish. Aside from gadgetry like my iPod I like using a PC because there's a huge amount of freedom in hardware and apps. I've never liked the idea of buying a box that I can never tinker with, upgrade or potentially start a fire with when I screw up. And quite honestly, if I were to switch my OS right now I wouldn't move in Apple's direction but dive into Linux instead. And that's the problem with Apple in general; they simply don't get the idea of picking function over form. It's like buying a car with the hood welded shut, keeping you from changing anything. I really don't like it when a company tells me what I can have and what I can't.

nice post! despite my well known obsession with technology, i have always considered my relationship to the computer in the utilitarian sense of user and tool. i choose to use a PC because it always seems to be the most useful tool for the price. end of story.
much of apple's turnaround over the last decade seems to center around turning technology into not just a tool, but an elite fashion statement. on the one hand, this has obviously worked well for them and i applaud the carving out of a new niche. on the other hand, it has created this kind of mac user that is so enamored with the perceived elite status of their technology purchase that they preach others to join the fold in a way that very much reminds me of a youth spent growing up in the lone non-fundamentalist family in a town full of evangelicals. and steve jobs is no jesus, thats for sure. boom.

Hi Jenka,
It's funny that you posted this. At Ci, we've just released a report that compares these 2 consumer groups through the wide lens of sustainability and social responsibility. PDF is available here:

http://www.ci-shift.com/sites/default/files/Apple_Microsoft_Rivalry.pdf

I also straddle both worlds and am often that *one* PC user in the meetings.. I only wish I could scuba dive! Thanks again, your writing and insight is always a treat.
