excellent post.
in response to your challenge to find the feather
hat aesthetic in popular culture/MSM and how that might have lead to ANTM's decision, i will say that John Galliano, Christian Dior and other couture designers have been on that for at least a couple of seasons (since late 2005 at least), and i have actually seen a lot of this in high-end fashion magazines (and french Vogue etc.), with a very heavy Cirque/ El Circo feel- the fedoras, the airbrushing decorative body paint, the vintage influence, the circus overtone - or even the more obscure (one of my favorite Dior looks here, very similar to what i see a lot of our extremely talented 'underground' designers doing:
http://207.58.155.90/~leblanc/images/uploads/dior.jpg)

it's hard to say whether Galliano and other couture designers are pulling from the circus/burlesque subcultures or whether it's the other way around, or maybe a loop between the two, and then fashion-mainstream things like ANTM pull from there. as far as a 'mainstream' example of the ANTM-replicated look, check out this promo for the Pussycat Dolls, which is almost exactly the same: http://www.clipov.net/free/oboi/pussycat-dolls1024-2.jpg),
i guess my point is that if you're a fashion junkie, i wouldn't have even blinked twice at seeing that ANTM ad because i've seen such things all over fashion media.

all good ideas about the feedback loops and remixes of culture; i think we are definitely at a point where it's almost impossible to be 'original', because we are all influenced by something. wait- didn't andy warhol say that in 1975?
