Another circus-themed music event was the 1968 Rock 'n' Roll Circus featuring The Rolling Stones, The Who, Taj Mahal, Marianne Faithfull, Jethro Tull, and The Dirty Mac :)

You should look up Bakhtin's notion of the carnivalesque; it resonates a lot with what you say about the circus. This sort of cultural manifestation isn't just a fad that comes and goes; it's a permanent undercurrent in any culture, methinks -- the circus had a special, liminal place in American culture long before Britney, and it will long after she's gone.

rafi, it's an interesting question. i don't really think there can really be a large-scale "reversal." our craving for attention is kind of an innate human thing. it's similar to how we crave salty and sugary things, and in the same way that we, as a society, have been massively overindulging on that craving (as evidenced by the obesity epidemic) we are now overindulging on the craving for attention and self-focus.

and at the same time, we have become totally accustomed to the instant availability of all these platforms for the expression of our personalities. i think we think of social media as pretty much our birthright at this poing, and i don't think anyone is really interested in giving that up any time soon.

on the other hand, i think we will become more aware of the inherent narcissism in a lot of what we spend our time doing, much like we have become more conscious of caloric information on food packaging, for instance. what we each choose to do based on that awareness remains an individual decision, but that primal craving isn't going away.
